Re: Increased Fuel Costs
Members:
With the rising costs of fuel, all personnel should be aware of two (2) issues that require your attention and cooperation.
1. Some residence may look to the use of alternative fuels in heating systems. For example, the use of kerosene instead of home heating oil will burn hotter and may cause problems with heating system.
All personnel responding to possible heating system malfunctions should be aware of the possibility of alternative heating fuels being used and should take the necessary SAFETY precautions including full PPE and SCBA prior to entering any building. Home-owners or residents may not be forthcoming with actual or truthful information. The Borough of Mahanoy City does have an Ordinance requiring the use of proper fuels in all heating systems. Any potential use of alternative fuels in heating systems should be referred to the Borough Code Enforcement Officer and myself.
2. To help keep costs to a minimum, all companies should limit the use of fire apparatus to responses only. It is rumored that Council may ask or require the Fire Department to start paying for fuel.
AT THIS TIME, IT IS JUST A RUMOR. However, public perception can have an affect on Council’s determinations concerning the budget and costs. I am asking all of you – if there is no need to take the apparatus out of the station, don’t.
Chiefs, you will be responsible for making sure your company personnel are informed and aware of the above. Should there be any questions, please contact me.
Respectfully yours,
